22 Mar Trigger Points
Anna Herbert, our in house Massage Therapist is now offering sports massage/ soft tissue therapy. Here she explains a bit about trigger points:
What is a Trigger Point?
A mighthy common cause of pain, these hypersensitive spots are found in hard bands of muscle and occur as a result of the fibers being locked in a shortened position. Ouch! When pressed they H.U.R.T! Their ‘special’ quality is being able to refer/ create pain to other predictable areas of the body.
There’s the ‘Active’ phase (a constant dull pain even at rest) and the ‘Latent’ phase (pain only when direct pressure is applied).
Trigger points can be found anywhere in the body, but most commonly in the postural muscles: neck, shoulders, and pelvic girdle. Stemming from repetitive overuse, poor posture, injuries, extended inactivity, and stress. They will cause pain, weakness in the muscle and reduce range of movement.
What is Therapy Point Therapy?
Trigger Point Therapy is a bodywork technique that involves a skilled sense of touch to locate and manually apply increasing static pressure to tender spots to deactivate the trigger point. Once the pain has diminished, a gentle stretch is applied to help you regain better movement. They need a helping hand to alleviate the pain- quite literally!
