28 Jul Sun, sea and back pain?
Off away on holiday this summer? Often when on holiday and out of our normal routine we are more prone to unnecessary discomfort and injuries. Here are some simple steps you can take from our Chiropractor Lauren Bright to help avoid pain.
Before you go
Suitcase selection is important – buy the lightest case possible as hard cases can weigh a lot before you’ve even packed – preferably with wheels! If travelling with a group take two light suitcases instead of one, so you can distribute the weight more evenly.
Pushing your case if possible or using a trolley rather than pulling it can help prevent your back from twisting.
Up, up and away!
Dehydration can exaggerate muscle pain so drink plenty of water on the flight. Try and get up and stretch your legs every 30 mins or so to avoid stiffness. Simple exercises like shoulder shrugs, buttock clenches and foot circles can help keep your body active during the flight too.
At your destination
Even the best quality hotel beds are not necessarily the right fit for your back. Hotel beds tend to be a bit firmer – if so try asking the reception for an additional duvet or duvet to put between you and mattress to help soften it Avoid using high or stiff pillows – if you sleep on your side keep your spine neutral by using a pillow which supports under the arch of your neck rather than your head.
If you’re heading to the sun loungers to top up your tan, try not to lie on your front with your back or neck arched back when reading. Put the book or magazine on the floor, so that you can view it over the edge of the sun bed, this should allow you to keep your head and neck in a more neutral position.
Hydration and movement
Generally keep mobile on holiday and remember to drink lots of water as dehydration can exacerbate back or neck pain.
