Holidaying in the UK – back care tips

Many of us have opted for UK based holidays this year – a great choice with this heatwave we’ve been having! Whilst being able to drive to your holiday destination takes away some of the pressures flying can put on your posture and back, it’s still important to be mindful of your back and neck when driving long distances.

On the day you’re heading off try picking out some loose clothing for the journey, not only to keep you cool but to make sure you don’t wear anything that will restrict your movement when driving.

When your bags are ready to be loaded into the car be conscious of your back at all times as you lift and load. Keep your back straight and relaxed and bend your arms, keeping your load as close to your body as you can. Avoid twisting from the waist. Always put lighter objects in first, pushing towards the back, so that it is not too strenuous to push them in or to pull them out when you reach your destination.

Before you set off remember to check your posture. Ensure the seat position is slightly backwards so that it feels natural and that your elbows are at a comfortable and relaxed angle. Even if you feel super comfy and you’re happily singing ‘we’re all going on a summer’s holiday’ try and pull in for a leg stretch every two hours!

When you do arrive have a little walk to loosen your muscles and joints before lifting your bags from the car – and just as you did with loading remember your back whilst lifting.

If you’re staying somewhere that has a harder bed than you’re used to try softening the mattress with spare blankets or quilts (because let’s face it you definitely won’t be needing them in this weather!). Also remember to do some warm up stretches before you take part in any form of exercise you may not be used to – swimming or horse riding perhaps.

Have a fabulous holiday. Please do share pictures of giant sandcastles on on our Facebook page – we’d love to see them! Or take part in our ‘Handpic Summer Competition’ – see our Facebook page for all the details. xxx
