π Back to School: A Fresh Start for the Whole Family
And just like that⦠the summer holidays have come to an end!
Whether you’re feeling ready for the routine again or desperately trying to squeeze in one last day of sunshine, September can feel like a big reset for the whole family.
New uniforms. New shoes. Packed lunches. Early mornings. Homework. After-school clubs. And, of course, the school bag that somehow seems to get heavier every year!
As a family-focused chiropractic clinic, we often talk to parents about the everyday things that can help support their family’s physical wellbeing. So, as everyone heads back through the school gates, here are a few simple things to keep in mind.
π Is their school bag ready for the journey?
School bags are a pretty unavoidable part of school life, so it’s worth giving them a quick check.
Does your child really need everything that’s currently in there?
Encourage them to take only what they need and, where possible, use both shoulder straps so the weight is distributed more comfortably.
It’s also worth checking that the bag fits well rather than hanging too low down their back.
And if your child is regularly telling you that their back, neck or shoulders are uncomfortable, don’t just dismiss it as “part of growing up”. It’s worth finding out what’s going on.
πββοΈ Make movement part of the day
After a summer of running around, climbing, swimming and playing, the return to school can mean more time sitting and concentrating.
Children don’t need complicated exercise programmes to move their bodies. Walking to school, playing at the park, riding a bike, dancing around the kitchen or kicking a ball around the garden all count as opportunities to move.
And movement can be good for grown-ups too!
Why not make the most of those lighter evenings while you still have them and get outside together after school?
It doesn’t have to be another thing to tick off the list β it can simply be family time.
π» Homework doesn’t have to mean sitting perfectly still
Let’s be honest β homework doesn’t always happen neatly at a desk with perfect posture!
Children might read on the sofa, draw at the kitchen table or do their homework wherever there happens to be space.
Rather than worrying about finding one “perfect” position, encourage your child to change position and take regular movement breaks, particularly if they’re spending a long time reading or using a screen.
Sometimes the simplest advice is the easiest to follow: move a little, change position and don’t stay stuck in one place for too long.
π Listen when your child says something hurts
Children can experience occasional aches and pains, especially after a busy day of running, playing or sport.
But if your child is regularly complaining about pain or discomfort, or it’s affecting the things they normally enjoy doing, it’s worth taking a moment to investigate rather than simply brushing it off.
If you’re concerned, speak to an appropriate healthcare professional who can assess the situation and advise you on the next steps.
And remember, you don’t have to be able to work out what’s wrong before asking for help.
π©βπ§ And don’t forget Mum, Dad & the grown-ups!
Back to school can be physically demanding for parents too.
There are bags to carry, little ones to lift, school runs to navigate, desks to sit at, and approximately 47 things to remember before 8.30am!
Try to look after yourself amongst all the busyness.
Get some movement into your day, change position regularly if you’re working at a desk, and don’t ignore persistent aches and pains just because everyone else needs looking after first.
You matter too.
πΏ Keep it simple
A new school year doesn’t need a complete lifestyle overhaul.
Sometimes it’s the little things that make the biggest difference to family life:
β¨ A little more walking
β¨ A little more outdoor play
β¨ A school bag that’s comfortable and not overloaded
β¨ Regular breaks from sitting and screens
β¨ And paying attention when someone is experiencing ongoing discomfort
Most importantly, give yourselves some grace.
There will be mornings when someone can’t find their shoes, lunches get left on the kitchen counter and bedtime goes completely out of the window.
That’s family life!
π‘ From our family to yours…
We hope the new school year gets off to a wonderful start.
If you or your child has an ongoing musculoskeletal concern and you’d like to find out whether chiropractic care may be appropriate, our team is always happy to have a conversation and explain how we may be able to help.
As with any healthcare, an individual assessment is important and chiropractic care isn’t appropriate for every person or every condition.
Here’s to a happy, healthy and slightly less chaotic September! π
